SoCal Ratings: Showdowns of the highly ranked on tap

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – Terrific quarterfinal showdowns in the State Southern Regionals are set for Friday and Saturday in Southern California. Among the four most notable of those are the Open matchups of Friday night, when Mater Dei (top-ranked in the BurlisonOnBasketball ratings) plays host to No. 11 Fairfax; No. 2 Sierra Canyon is at home to No. 22 Foothills Christian; No. 4 Etiwanda travels to No. 5 Westchester; and No. 3 Bishop Montgomery takes on visiting No. 12 Mission Bay. And, on Saturday, some scintillating showdowns include No. 10 Chino Hills, led by 6-foot-9 junior Onyeka Okongwu, at Brandon Williams-led and No. 8-ranked Crespi, as well as No. 15 Long Beach Poly at No. 6 St. John Bosco, and No. 18 Taft at No. 13 Pasadena. All of those are D-I affairs and the fourth won’t be set until the conclusion of the Thursday night Rancho Verde vs. Santa Margarita (at JSerra) clash Thursday. The winner of that one visits Temecula Saturday to play No. 7 Rancho Christian. Seven of those nine teams were part of the field of the Classic at Damien tournament in December.
