Prospect Spotlight: Donavan Estrada (2020)
Nampa’s 5-foot-10 point-guard Donavan Estrada currently checks in as Idaho’s 5th-ranked 2020 on the hardwood. But he’s a standout on the gridiron, too.
He says there’s not one sport that he prefers over the other, but one thing is clear: Estrada could have a future in either sport.
We recently caught up with the talented sophomore, and he explained to PHID what makes him so effective on the hardwood.
“My strengths are my dribbling skills and my playmaking, just getting teammates open. When I dribble and penetrate the paint, I kick out to my teammates for a lot of 3-point shots,” said Estrada.
“I need to improve my shooting, and on the defensive side of the ball also.”
As the starting point guard at Nampa, Estrada has done well. He says he’s averaging 9.5 points and 2.7 assists per game this season.
“Individually, I think I’ve had a decent season. I feel like I could be doing better, but it what it is,” said Estrada. “Team-wise, it’s not been the best year, but there’s been times where we show we can compete with anyone in the league.
In just a few months, he’ll start his 16U campaign. He played with Idaho Select last spring, before football became his priority in the summer.
This offseason, he’s going to try and play hoops in the spring and summer.
“I’m going to try and play summer and spring this season, but I have football in the summer so, we’ll see. But I’m going to try and play with Idaho Select this summer, too,” said Estrada.
As for his recruitment, that’s something the young point guard hasn’t experienced much of yet. But he’s hoping that can start to take shape this offseason.
“Recruitment has definitely crossed my mind, and I haven’t had the opportunity to get talked to yet or anything,” said Estrada.
