NKC TOURNAMENT RECAP: Standout ’Bigs’
Prep Hoops Kansas was on for the 68th annual North Kansas City Invitational, which was won on Friday by Columbia Rock Bridge, who knocked off Park Hill South.
In other action, Oak Park knocked off host North Kansas City in the third-place game, 63-59.
With the win, the Bruins remain unbeaten this season. Here are some of the top ‘Bigs’ who were getting it done throughout the weekend.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at the top guards at the event.
Andrew Hipp (6’7, PF.C, 2018, St. Pius X). Hipp is a big strong interior player who knows who he is and enjoys mixing it up in the paint. He is a solid rebounder and works hard for position at the offensive end of the court.
Tyson Cathy (6’5, PG/C, 2018, Liberty North). The Benedictine commit continues to shine this season, showing the ability to rebound, defend and block shots. He is an underrated defensive player, and has an emerging skill set at the offensive end with an improved outside shot.
Kian Scroggins (6’5, PF, 2020, Raymore-Peculiar). Scroggins is emerging this season as a player to watch in the 2020 class going forward. He has the ability to score in the post, but has a versatile perimeter game as well, able to knock down outside shots and put the ball on the floor as well.
Wesley McCullough (6’7, PF, 2018, Raymore-Peculiar). McCullough isn’t your typical ‘Big,’ rather he prefers to do most of his offensive damage on the 3-point line and projects as one of the state’s premier stretch 4 prospects. He is a strong rebounder, will block shots and does a good job finishing plays around the basket. McCullough is committed to play at NCAA Division II Sioux Falls.
Devin Bernskoetter (6’3, F, 2018, Rock Bridge). Bernskoetter is more of a forward than a typical ‘Big,’ and brings a diverse skill set to the court. He has the ability to do the little things at a high level, rebounds, defends and finds a way to finish tough chances around the basket. He came off the Bruins’ bench to put together a strong tournament.
Lance Rogers (6’5, PF, 2019, North Kansas City). A left hander, Rogers has a versatile inside-out skill set, able to rebound, score on the block, and can shoot from the perimeter. He has the ability to knock down 3-pointers and can handle the ball a little, forcing mismatches.
C.J. Lee (6’3, PF/C, 2019, Park Hill South). Lee is a physical force in the paint and has the ability to defend, rebound and carve out ways to score in the paint. He is a strong, physical player who brings a football mentality to the hardwood.
