At the beginning of the season, an argument could be made based off the top three teams in Class 5A. Throughout the season a few teams have emerged to solidify Class 5A.
The top five in Class 5A has a record of 13-4 against Class 6A teams with seven of those victories coming against top ten teams in Class 6A. The prospects in Class 5A are loaded with talent that includes Mason Harrell (Carl Albert), Trey Hopkins (Carl Albert), Mo Wilson (NW Classen), Da’Lin Wiggins (NW Classen), Kalib Boone (Tulsa Memorial), Keylan Boone (Tulsa Memorial), Bryce Thompson (Booker T. Washington), Jaycson Bereal (Booker T. Washington), Seth Hurd (Booker T. Washington), Trey Phipps (Booker T. Washington), RJ Fisher (Lawton Ike), and Antonio Gordon (Lawton Ike).
A great amount of the players listed above will have the opportunity to play at the NCAA Division I level. When you step back at a glance and look at the records of the top five teams in Class 5A, the talented players leading the way, and the coaching guiding the teams. It has become clear to me the best basketball at the top in the state of Oklahoma is being played in Class 5A.
There are also teams outside the top five making moves in Class 5A Coweta, Nathan Hale, El Reno and Del City. The improvements in Nathan Hale have been remarkable to keep track of this season.
Class 5A has elevated this season featuring better players and teams than years past.
What does this mean for this year?
I think the biggest thing this does is benefit Oklahoma high school hoops. Basketball fans used to focus on just Class 6A for the top talent. This year proves the talent has spread across the state. Class 6A is not bad by any means, there just has not been a dominant team or two at the top this year. The outcome for this year ensures for this year Class 5A and 6A will feature one of the best playoff runs Oklahoma has seen in quite some time. Expect March to be filled with upsets and fun.
Buckle in and enjoy the show.
