Notebook: Indianapolis Roncalli Holiday Tournament
The Indianapolis Roncalli Holiday Tournament got underway on Friday morning with a couple of semifinal games. We were on hand to take a look at the morning session and here are our notes.
Indianapolis Roncalli 66, Franklin County 53
Early on, you saw the kind of team Roncalli is with their balanced scoring attack and toughness. They got up 18-11 after the first quarter and Jack Hegwood, a senior forward was leading the way. Moving into the second quarter, Franklin County struggled to keep pace but they got some help from Trevor Murray who was knocking down threes at a good clip. Late in the game, Franklin County caught up a big after being down as many as 20. They pulled within 12 and had a chance but Roncalli’s rebounding came up big as they struggled to hit shots. Roncalli held them off at the end and came away with a solid victory.
Roncalli had a balanced attack with 4 players in double figures led by Jack Hegwood’s 16. Roncalli outrebounded Franklin County, 30-14 in the game. The player of the game was Franklin County senior guard Trevor Murray who went 8/14 from three and was on fire for the first three quarters. There were a few colleges in the building with DePauw and Marian watching senior forward Kellen Schreiber for Roncalli.
Top Performers:
Jack Hegwood (Roncalli): 16 points (7/10 FG), 6 rebounds
Kellen Schreiber (Roncalli): 14 points (6/8 FG), 10 rebounds
Trevor Murray (Franklin Co.): 28 points (8/14 3FG), 2 rebounds
Hunter Mayfield (Franklin Co.): 7 points (3/5 FG), 3 rebounds
Floyd Central 75, Hamilton Heights 57
From the jump, Floyd jumped out with 22 points in the opening quarter and they were led by Luke Gohmann who was on his way to one of the better performances we have seen from him. Heights brought freshman Gus Etchison off the bench and he was an instant spark plug hitting 7 points in his first few minutes. He helped to keep Hamilton Heights closer but the size difference really killed things for them. Floyd kept running guys at the rim with Luke Gohmann, Cobie Barnes, Brendon Hobson, and Evan Nichols. They imposed their will throughout the entire game and Heights struggled to get clean looks in the second half to keep pace.
For Heights, Etchison was impressive early on but he was joined by Camron Knott, a sophomore guard who showed a pretty good perimeter jumper. His size and elevation made him about the only player that was able to get off a clean shot from deep. Floyd got a great performance from Gohmann but Brendon Hobson was really good as well scoring 6 points and grabbing 5 rebounds and impacting both ends of the floor.
