The Harwell name continues to be a strong one inside basketball circles of the Gem state. Deshun Harwell, a guard for Century High School where another Harwell starred (Malek Harwell, now a sophomore for Boise State) has ripped off two straight impressive games to help his team notch consecutive wins to start their 2017-2018 season.
Harwell kicked things off for Century by going for 21 points in a 71-47 home win against Twin Falls. Harwell dropped 15 of his 21 points in the first half. Currently ranked in the top 10 of our 2019 rankings, Harwell is a player that will likely climb higher by season’s end, especially if he continues his recent play. Following his first game, Harwell went out and did it again for the Diamondbacks by scoring 14 points and once again leading his team to a W. Also, five of this teammates scored in double figures during the win over Burley 62-58, a sign that Harwell is playing team oriented basketball from the guard position.
Harwell’s stock is rising as a prospect and the Harwell name from Pocatello has brought plenty of basketball fire power over the years as Malek finished with a number of accolades and held offers from schools such as Utah State, Boise State, Idaho State, Loyola Marymount, Lehigh, Portland, Colorado, Weber State, San Francisco, Toledo, Wyoming and Tulsa. Whether or not Deshun will warrant such notice remains to be seen, but his current play to begin 17-18 is certainly a step in the right direction.
Behind Harwell’s excellent play Century has moved to a tie at the top of the 4A standings with Skyview in the early going of this 2017-2018 season. Of course, there is a long way to go in the season, but Harwell and his squad have made an early mark and look to be one of the top teams in the conference. A standout on the football field as well in which Harwell just finished up his season a short bit ago, Harwell’s work ethic has never been in question as he has always shown a will to get better each and everyday often times staying after practice and doing workouts on his own outside of the team and season.
The result is a budding top talent in the state at the guard position who has a high ceiling, the smooth and sometimes effortless looking Harwell should continue his high level of play and help lead this Century team throughout the season. After their blistering start, Century hoops gets a bit of a break as they will next face Jerome Tuesday, December 5th at home in Pocatello.
Harwell is a player to watch and stay focused on as we make our way through early part of the season and beyond. It is very likely that his quick start will continue which means positive things are on the horizon for Century.
