Recruiting Report: Sedrick Hammond (2019)
Nevada’s loss became Southern California’s gain when 6-foot-3 junior Sedrick Hammond decided to enroll at Los Angeles Cathedral High School a few months back. “The transition has been smooth both on and off the court and I’m doing much better academically as well,” an engaged Hammonds noted.
Hammond is yet another talented out-of-state transfer—PJ Fuller (Mater Dei) and Duane Washington (Sierra Canyon) are others of note—that are prime to make an immediate impact on the So-Cal scene.
A season ago, Hammond was a standout at the Pangos All Frosh/Soph Camp due to his athleticism and defensive prowess. However, now he is evolving into a complete player.
“My strengths are getting to the basket and utilizing my quickness and strength to power to through opponents, but I still need to work on my left hand and jump shot mechanics to take my game to another level.”
Hammond is evolving into a solid D 1 all-around guard. This fall Hammond has shown the ability to run a team. He is making more point guard-like decisions in the half court set due to his improved feel for the game and passing, but he continues to improve his scoring skills as well.
When you combine his size, strength, and aggressive mindset at both ends you’re going to attract college attention. Although it’s early in the process, there are a couple of schools that standout.
New Mexico and Tulane have been on me the hardest, but there are others that are coming on strong as well,” says Hammond.
The word upside is tossed around a bunch in the scouting world, but it really fits with Hammond due to his physical gifts, aggressive mentality, and willingness to improve. As the regular high schools season begins in a month, look for him to have a breakout junior campaign that will spark his recruiting portfolio.
