Prospect Watch: Dominic Mitchell (2018)
Class of 2018 forward Dominic Mitchell of St.Mary’s is a most unique player who has an old-school style that is very effective.
The 6’3″ Mitchell isn’t the biggest or the most athletic player around, but he gets things done on the court with his high basketball IQ, crafty moves and overall savvy. He has attracted collegiate interest from schools such as Quincy, UMSL, Drury and Millikin.
Mitchell has a versatile skill set, but he can do plenty of damage around the rim with his assortment of head fakes and herky-jerky moves that constantly keeps defenders off balance. He is also an excellent ball handler who can make decisions with the ball.
“I’m very versatile and can play all over the court,” Mitchell said. “I can handle the ball pretty well for a forward. I can get to the basket and find the open man. It’s a big advantage for me because I can get the rebound and take off up the floor with the ball and start the fast break.”
Mitchell spent the first two years of his career at MICDS, where he was the Rams second leading scorer and leading rebounder. He transferred to St. Mary’s for his junior season, where he helped the Dragons to a 25-4 record and a Class 4 district championship. He averaged 7.1 points and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the field.
Mitchell is one of several veterans back for the Dragons on a team that is poised to make a run at a state championship. The Dragons were defeated by eventual state-champion Vashon in the sectionals in an overtime thriller.
“I’m definitely looking forward to making it to state this year,” he said. “We’re returning a lot of veteran players this year. Our team is looking really good and I feel like we have what it takes to come out on top.”
Mitchell figures to be even more of a factor as a senior as it is his second year in the program. An improved perimeter jumper also figures to help the cause.
“I’ve really improved my shooting a lot this fall,” he said. “I’ve been shooting the ball better from behind the 3-point line. I am able to stretch the floor out a little bit more.”
