Prospect Spotlight: Nate Awbrey (2018)
Manhattan 2018 point guard Nate Awbrey is gearing up for a big senior season after a strong spring and summer competing for SSA Elite.
An underrated performer who plays tough at both ends of the floor, Awbrey is a standout perimeter shooter that has the ability to carry a team at the offensive end of the court.
This season he will be counted on for additional production after the Indians graduated six seniors from a team that went 18-5 and advanced to the Kansas 6A state championships in Wichita.
“I would describe my game as energetic, I am a hardworking player that creates opportunities for myself and others,” Awbrey says. “This summer was a fun experience and I enjoyed playing with my team. I felt I grew as a player by becoming more of a leader on the court trying to hold myself and my teammates accountable.”
Manhattan will be replacing seniors Trevor Hudgins, Luke Saville, Cade Robert, Tommy Ekart, Ian Trap and Hose Haus this season — but Awbrey says the team enters the 2017-18 with high expectations.
“This upcoming season will be exciting,” he said. “There will be a lot of new bodies on the court but I think we have a lot of talent and we have the potential to be really good.
“I look forward to playing Hayden out of Topeka because they have some very talented players that will create fun matchups.”
A fan of Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westborrk, Nate Awbrey says his bother has had the biggest impact on his high school career to date.
“Growing up he was also there to push me and to make me better everyday,” Awbrey said. “Also he made me a tough player, because I had to learn how to play against bigger, stronger players.”
Awbrey says he has drawn interest from Manhattan Christian College and Dallas Christian College and plans on visiting both campuses soon.
