Prospect Spotlight: Bryant Howing (2018)
When you play alongside one of the top 2019 prospects on the West Coast, it’s easy to get overlooked.
Bryant Howing, a 6-2 senior at Los Altos, falls into that category. His teammate Jarod Lucas – and to a lesser extent, fellow senior Julian Lopez – get most of the ink.
But over the past few months Howing has shown that he’s a quality prospect in his own right.
We first noticed Howing playing a central role for his travel team at the Double Pump Spring Hoop Fest. There, he gave a Supreme Court AAU team all it could handle in a close championship loss.
Howing followed up his strong showing with another strong showing at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo, where his slick playmaking and sharpshooting stood out. He made Devin Ugland’s “Top Shooters” report following the event, and displayed a deceptively quick first step on offense.
“I can pass the ball, I can shoot it when I’m open, I can pull up off the dribble,” Howing said. “When people close out on me I just rip right by them, and I finish with my right or my left, or pull up for the jump shot.”
Howing acknowledges, however, he needs to improve his lateral quickness. This will make him an even more effective defender, as he does give good effort on that end.
Howing said two colleges have reached out and are showing interest: University of LaVerne and Whittier College.
He said he wants to attend a college that will improve him as a player and a person.
“I want to go somewhere that’s a family, where they’ll keep me on track with my grades,” Howing said. “And ultimately make me a better player.”
