Mckyan “Mac” James Prospect Report (2018)
Former Brentwood Academy point guard Mckyan James A.K.A. “Mac” began his high school career behind, and at times sharing the backcourt with, Darius Garland (PHT #1).
That Brentwood Academy freshman class was truly remarkable and earned significant playing time right away. Beyond Garland and Mac James the Eagles ran out Camron Johnson and Gavin Schoenwald. While both plan to play college football instead of basketball their commitment to hoops never wavered in their freshman seasons.
The Class of 2018 was instrumental in building the program into a 3-time Division II Class AA State Champions. With the #1 player in the Tennessee they anticipate a fourth title this winter.
Midway through his sophomore season, James’ path diverged from Brentwood Academy.
The Transfer
Mac James now suits up for Independence High School.
Adapting to his new environment has not been difficult.
An accomplished student, Mac James earned a 24 on his ACT. Don’t read that as an anomaly either. The senior point guard maintains a 3.8 GPA indicating his intelligence is accompanied by academic diligence.
There is really a premium on intelligent point guards and coaches realize how valuable the proverbial “coach on the floor” can be. Coaches that lack a competent mind directing their players around certainly learn the hard way.
Beyond mental acuity, Mac James has tangible skills on the court too. He was a slick ball-handler before he hit his first teenage birthday. Training with Garland helped James improve his jumper. James is really smart about penetrating and finding teammates.
It must be said that the 5-foot-9 point guard does require a full game evaluation to enjoy him. He is not intimidating opponents getting off the bus. Still Mac James can play and will play beyond high school.
According to Mac James the following colleges are interested: Albion College, Maryville (MO), STLCOP, Columbia College, Belmont Abbey College, Queens University.
