The Basketball Interview … Meet Clay Gayman
One of the state’s hardest working players, Nevada forward Clay Gayman is coming off a big summer competing for the KC Pacers and recently committed to Abilene Christian, an NCAA Division I program located in Abilene, Texas.
Prep Hoops recently sat down with Gayman and talked to him about his game and the upcoming season during a basketball camp in Nixa, Mo.
Prep Hoops — How would you describe your game to someone who has never seen you play?
Gayman — For someone who has never seen me play before, I am a hustle guy. I’m bound and determined to outwork my opponents in all that I do. I’m a good free throw shooter. I rebound the ball. I get on the floor for loose balls. I take charges. I’m just a worker.
Prep Hoops — Tell us about your summer playing grassroots basketball and how has your game improved during the offseason.
Gayman — My summer experience was great. I played with the Kansas City Pacers. It’s a great program. I worked on my offensive game a lot. I feel a lot more diverse now. My three point shot is better now than it ever has been. I’m just growing every day.
Prep Hoops — Tell us about your team at Nevada and the expectations for this season.
Gayman — My high school team was pretty good last year. We won 21 games. We lost in our district championship to a very solid Grandview team. It was kind of a letdown. But we are looking to get back. But we’re looking to get that championship this year for the first time in over 20 years.
Prep Hoops — What players do you enjoy watching play and are there elements of their game that you have tried to make your own?
Gayman — Gordon Hayward is my favorite player. I’ve tried to model my game after him a lot. Coming off down screens. Being very diverse in the mid-range game. Also being a very good finisher.
Prep Hoops — Who has been the biggest influence in your basketball career?
Gayman — My dad has always encouraged me to go out and practice. Even on days when I didn’t want to. He’s had a very huge impact on my basketball career. I’d like to thank him for everything he has done to me.
Prep Hoops — Tell us about your commitment to Abilene Christian?
Gayman — I just got back from Abilene Christian University (on Saturday). I committed with (head coach Joe) Golding. I’ve had a great time talking with the staff. I love the campus. I’ve loved everything I’ve heard. It’s a great Christian environment. I’m just thankful for the Lord for giving me that opportunity to play.
Prep Hoops — What areas of your game are you focused on as you prepare for the upcoming season.
Gayman — Right now I’ve been working on my defensive. I’ve watched a lot of Kawhi Leonard tapes, Draymond Green tapes. Just try to be more diverse in my defensive attack. Try to get steals, more defensive rebounds and block out on every play.
