Sectional Preview: 63
The coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 63.
Barr-Reeve (23-3) – Lost Sectional Finals in 2A
Last season, Barr-Reeve was up a level in 2A and lost to a tough South Knox team in the Sectional Finals. Now, they will be trying to regroup after losing five seniors including Javan Miller, Jonathan Walker, Trevor Lengacher. Look for Gabe Gladish, Keegan O’Neill, and Austin Ainscough as the core who will be able to keep the tradition of tough, low-scoring Barr-Reeve programs.
Loogootee (21-8) – Sectional Champions, Lost Regional Semifinals
This past year was a big one for Loogootee who were able to win another Sectional. They came up a big short in Regionals with a senior-heavy group. Losing Tye Collins and Griffin Spring will really hurt. They didn’t have a deep roster last year and only return four varsity players. Could be a tough year especially with rival Barr-Reeve back in the fold.
Orleans (5-19) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Orleans was only able to pull in five wins last year and didn’t make it out of the first round. They have moved from the Borden Sectional where they were going to be a team near the top to a Sectional where they might be more in the middle of the road. However, they return most of their top talent including Duncan Gerkin, their 17ppg Senior.
Shoals (7-18) – Lost Sectional Finals
For Shoals, they were able to get a key win and a bye to push them into the Sectional Finals with only 7 wins on the season. However, not much is going to change on their roster and their Sectional just got a ton harder with adding Barr-Reeve. Will need a big jump to be middle of the road this season.
Vincennes Rivet (7-17) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
For Vincennes Rivet, they struggled a bit last year as they only were able to bring in a 7-win season. However, they don’t lose a ton from last season’s team so there is a chance they can continue to build upon their roster. They should have the ability to be competitive but the top end of the Sectional is going to be tough.
Washington Catholic (4-18) – Lost 1st Rd. Sectional
Washington Catholic only was able to muster four wins on the year this past season. Not to pile on but they lose their top two scorers and seven outgoing seniors in total. However, a new group of talent could be the start of a better, but younger product. Could take some time though.
Contenders For 2017-18: Barr-Reeve, Loogootee
Prediction: Barr-Reeve
Player to Watch: Gabe Gladish (Barr-Reeve)
