The three star prospect is one of the top five prospects in the state of Wisconsin this year. Needing a guard that can handle the ball and play the wing the Gophers went to watch Tyrese on Monday and liked what they say.
“I didn’t know what to expect today when they came to open gym but to hear I had a scholarship was crazy, all these offers are truly a blessing but there’s more work to get done,” Haliburton told GI shortly after receiving his offer.
The Gophers joined Cincinnati, Iowa State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, Charlotte, Bradley, and a host of other Midwest mid-major programs. Tyrese has taken a visit and has scheduled others. Minnesota could jump in and get a visit as well.
“I went to Nebraska the weekend of September 1-3,” Tyrese said. “I’m going to Iowa State on the weekend of September 28-30, Northern Iowa October 13-15, and Cincinnati October 20-22.
“The plan is to visit Minnesota next weekend, but it’s still not for sure.”
Minnesota is the closest high major program to offer Tyrese when it comes to his Oshkosh home. Haliburton and his family are 4.5 hours from Minneapolis and about six hours from Ames, Iowa.
Tyrese has followed the Gopher program’s recent success.
“I know that Coach Richard Pitino seems to be building a great program here especially with the 2018 recruits he’s gotten and the team they expect to have his year,” Tyrese said.
“I see that they won’t be as guard heavy with Nate Mason graduating so I see a fit there.”
Haliburton is a thin prospect but very skilled. He’s looking for a school that will develop him into the prospect he wants to be.
“I think development is probably the most important thing I’m looking for,” Tyrese said. “I’ve been skinny my whole life and going to college, I’m going to need to put on muscle and grow as a player.
“Also important is a relationship with the coach and players because that’s who your spending your most time with, and guys that you’re playing with.
“Having all of those will lead to winning for sure but of course, like any player should I want success in college as well.”
Tyrese helped Oshkosh North to a 25-1 season as a junior and Wisconsin high school basketball analyst Mark Miller described Tyrese in the following way:
“Long, wiry backcourt player who can play either guard position. Length and aggressiveness allows him to get to the basket and finish. Averaged 16.0 ppg as a junior and earned Player of the Year honors in the Fox Valley Association for an Oshkosh North squad that went 25-1.”
Haliburton describes himself as a player in a similar way.
“A player that knows how to facilitate and communicate with his teammates and coaches, the ability to keep my team in games and does whatever he can to get a win,” Tyrese said to Prep Hoops.
Who does Haliburton model his game after? A young player that just entered the NBA with the LA Lakers.
“I think Lonzo Ball, I think there are a lot of similarities between us two and I’ve heard some people compare the playing styles, we both have unorthodox forms and facilitate real well. Quite a few coaches have told me I play like him and I’m trying to take some things from his game but also be unique in myself with how I play.”
