Prospect Watch: Trey King (2019)
Six-foot-1, 190 pound junior Trey King from Irene-Wakonda is one of the state’s top 2019 talents producing in every spot on the court.
This is a young man that as a sophomore averaged 18.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, five assists, and nearly four steals a game. Production like that is hard to find and King did it playing for a team that went 15-8 and brings back most of their talent.
“We have four of four five starters coming back which means we have a ton of experience with a good bench and looking to go far in the new conference,” King explained.
King is the quarterback of the football team this year and so far the squad is 3-0. Hoops time is of course somewhat limited now but there is a lot of time between football and basketball.
“Making sure I get into the gym and weight room as much as I can,” King said of his fall goals for basketball. “In the gym, I need to focus mainly on my pull-up jumper and ball handling, but there is always improvement for everything else as well.”
King is also coming off a strong 16u season with the Dakota Schoolers.
“My top highlights of this last 16u season were winning the Pentagon Summer Slam tournament and scoring 35 points against KC Run GMC down in Kansas City.
“I felt like improved mentally from having a pass first mentality to a score first mentality thanks to coach Matt Daly.”
Trey shot 47 percent from the field last season and 75 percent from the foul line on the way to his 18 plus a game.
King’s hoops influence? That stays within the family.
“My brother Gabe King that plays for Northern is who I look up to, him and my dad are the ones who taught me everything I know today,” King said. “My favorite hooper is Lebron (James).”
King is listed as scoring 991 points in his career so he should go over 1,000 points a game into his junior year.
