Prospect watch: Trevor Savelkoul (2018)
Trevor Savelkoul might not have prototypical low-post player height. He makes up for it though with strength and energy.
Savelkoul, a 6-foot-4 forward from Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood , spent the grassroots season with North Dakota Cougars where he joined a collection of some of the best players in the state against top talent from all over the midwest.
“I found it to be a lot of fun,” said Savelkoul. “A lot of guys from the area that I play against and it was a lot of fun getting to know guys and get to play some basketball. You get some of the best talent in an area and it just makes things a lot of fun.”
Savelkoul spent the early portion of the summer working his way back from a foot injury that sidelined him at the end of his junior season. That meant getting up the speed on the pace of the game took some adjusting. But playing that kind of competition was beneficial.
“I was coming back from an injury for the first part of the AAU season so I think the biggest thing for me was just using the summer to get into shape and learning how to play at that pace,” said Savelkoul. “Overall just being able to know you have to push more and play faster and more physical was a big help for me.”
Savelkoul averaged 14 points per game during his junior season and his bread-and-butter is his ability to produce in the paint. He’s working on expanding his game in hopes of playing hoops in college.
“I play a lot of post and I feel like that is my strength,” said Savelkoul. “I know I need to develop my outside game a little more. I want to play in college so I know that’s a big area of my game that I need to continue improving. Getting stronger and faster is a big part too.”
Savelkoul said he hasn’t talked to any schools yet but is hoping to reach out to colleges or catch on with a junior college if possible.
Before all that, Savelkoul is excited about the upcoming winter season.
“We have a number of good returners back,” said Savelkoul. “A couple good athletes. I’d think we should be competitive to most teams. I’m excited to get started.”
