Prospect Watch: Marco Powells (2018)
Class of 2018 guard Marco Powells for Fort Zumwalt North has been a consistent performer in the Panthers’ lineup since his freshman year.
As he enters his senior year, the 6’0″ Powell’s leadership will be counted on more than ever as the Panthers will have a young team around him as well as a new head coach.
“I’ve been taking more of a leadership role with the team,” Powells said. “We have a lot of young kids on the team.”
As for stuffing the stat sheet, Powells has all of that covered as he did a little of everything last season to lead the Panthers. As a junior, Powell averaged 17.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 46 percent from the field. Powells is a tough, physical guard who attacks the basket hard and playing through contact. He is a good finisher around the rim and gets to the free throw line often.
“I really like attacking the basket and creating for others,” Powell said.
The one aspect of his game that Powell has been working on has been his perimeter shooting. He showcased a much improved shooting stroke from 3-point range during the summer, where he played for his father’s St. Louis Cobras Elite 17U team.
“I have been working on my shooting a ton,” he said. “Every chance I get, I am in the gym and shooting the basketball.”
Although Powells is primed for another big season individually, he is hoping to close out his career on a winning note as a district champion once again. As a sophomore in 2016, he helped sparked the Panthers to a surprise run to a Class 5 district championship.
“As a team, we want to go into the season and win as much as possible,” he said. “Hopefully, we can make another district championship run like we did a couple of years ago.”
