Prospect Watch: Desmond Morris (2018)
Class of 2018 guard Desmond Morris of Jackson is a solid all-around performer who gets the job done at both backcourt positions.
The 6’2″ Morris is also an excellent two-sport athlete for the Indians. When he isn’t knocking down 3-pointers on the basketball court, he is also scoring goals on the soccer field.
“I’ve gotten some college interest in both soccer and basketball,” Morris said. “I haven’t decided what I want to do yet at the next level. We’ll just see how it goes.”
On the basketball court, Morris has been a big part of Jackson’s recent run of Class 5 district championships, which reached five last season. He is an excellent 3-point shooter who is also a solid ball handler and passer. He also has ideal size as a combo guard. Morris is one of several talented players back for a Jackson team that will make a strong run for a sixth consecutive district crown.
“It has been a lot of fun,” Morris said. “We just want to go further than we did last season. We have most of our team back, so we should have a good season. I’m looking forward to it.”
Morris spent the past three summers playing with the SEMO Storm during the grassroots season, where he played with many of his Jackson High teammates and other top players from the Southeast Missouri. He was one of many players on the team who could pass, catch and shoot 3-pointers at a high rate.
“It’s been fun to play with the Storm and fun to watch,” Morris said. “It has been fun to play with all of those guys because they could move the ball. We had a good time playing together.”
