Prospect Watch: Alex Schimke (2019)
Minot guard Alex Schimke came off the bench and played a key role for the state champs last winter. Now he’s an upperclassmen key piece.
Chandleron Albertson and Peyton Lamoureux return as seniors as does Lofton Klabunde plus you have Schmike who played above his years. Now he’s a veteran hoping for more gold.
“We have high expectations,” Alex said. “We know we will have a target on our back and we are excited for the challenge. We have four veteran returners from last year and we are confident in our young guys to step up and contribute.”
It was a quiet summer for Alex basketball wise as he spent most of his days outside in the sun.
“I really didn’t play any organized basketball. I played legion baseball all summer and really didn’t get much basketball in.”
That will change this fall though as Schimke plans to do a lot of preparing for the winter year.
“I’m focusing on lifting this fall before the season getting stronger and faster. Also in the gym as much as I can ball handling and getting shots up, as well as working on defense and rebounding.”
Alex gave Minot nine points a game off the bench last year hitting on 46 percent of the 7-8 shots he took a game. Alex made 44 percent of the 3-4 threes he took a night and 86 percent of his foul shots.
So the guy is a skilled shooter who grabbed five boards a game plus three assists a contest. No wonder his favorite players are some of the NBA’s most skilled players.
“I don’t know that I have anyone that really influences my game, but I do enjoy watching guys like Stephen Curry and Chris Paul who really distribute the ball and can see the floor well. They just make everyone around them better.”
