Recruiting Report: Kaleb Johnson (2018)
A torn ACL would ruin a lot of players. It only made Kaleb Johnson stronger.
Johnson, a 5-foot-11 poing guard from Fargo South High School suffered a torn ACL last summer, missing a bulk of his AAU season and half of his high school season because of it. He made up for lost time in the half season he had as a junior and over the summer playing with ECI Prospects.
“This summer went great,” said Johnson. “Last summer I couldnt play because I tore my ACL. It was a slow start at the beginning but I felt way more comfortably by the end of the season.”
Johnson used the time rehabbing as an opportunity to learn more about the game and focus on the nuances of playing point guard.
“I watched a lot of videos for passing and dribbling,” said Johnson. “I couldn’t go out and play so I had to incorporate new ways to get better. I tried to work on my shooting a lot and that’s a big part of my game that I want to keep improving at.”
Johnson’s drawn a lot of college interest in both football and basketball though he favors basketball if all the offers are equal.
Thus far, Jamestown, Minot State, University of Mary and Valley City have shown basketball interest while Mary and Minnesota State, Moorhead have shown football interest.
Johnson averaged 13 points, five rebounds and 5 assists upon returning to the court during his junior year and earned all-conference honors in the process. A natural point guard, Johnson said he prefers to distribute the ball and get guys involved rather than look for his own offense.
“I’m the type of player that makes people better,” Johnson said. “I try to keep the ball moving and feed guys. I love passing. I’d much rather pass than shoot. I know this upcoming year I’ll have to be a little more selfish but I’m definitely a pass-first guy.”
