Recruiting Report: Ian Schafer (2018)
ECI Prospects had a bunch of quality scorers and shooters. They needed a guy who could get them the ball. Ian Schafer fit that role nicely.
Schafer, a 5-foot-9 point guard from Bismarck, spent the Grassroots season with ECI Prospects, helping form arguably the top team in the Dakotas.
“Really good, probably our best team in the last few years,” Schafer said of the AAU season. “I’ve played with the team all the way through since my 15 year. This was probably my best summer.”
Schafer’s a good outside shooter and handles the point guard responsibilities well as he’s adept at running a team. He does a good job balancing looking for his own shot with getting guys involved in the flow of the offense.
“I thought I cut down on turnovers a lot, handling the ball and improving decision making,” Schafer said. “It’s huge. North Dakota there are only so many good players and all those guys are either on your team or on one of the couple other teams. So it’s a great opportunity to get out and play against great players around the midwest.”
Schafer is drawing interest from several colleges about potentially playing basketball at the next level.
“Concordia Moorhead is on me pretty heavy and I like them a lot,” said Schafer. “Southwest Minnesota has talked to me a lot too. I have a visit with Concordia coming up hopefully sometime in the next few weeks.”
Schafer’s got time to figure out his future. He’s looking forward to this upcoming winter where Bismarck figures to be one of the top teams in Class A.
“We are returning three starters but we bring back seven guys that played last year,” Schafer said. “So I’m very excited. I think we’re going to have a big year.”
