Recruiting Report: Dontez Rayner (2018)
Dontez Rayner – 6’2” | SG | Indiana Legends 2018 | Indianapolis Lighthouse
Dontez Rayner is a strong, quick, and all-around two guard in the Class of 2018. He played his spring and summer ball with the Indiana Legends. He attends Indianapolis Lighthouse where he is gearing up for a strong senior season and building on his recruiting.
“This summer playing with the Legends turned me into a better teammate and just made me see the game more.” Dontez does a little bit of everything for Indianapolis Lighthouse, but with the Legends, he was able to focus on being an effective shooting guard. He studied the game throughout the summer and found ways to be more impactful in key areas that will carry over to the college level. Rayner is a high IQ prospect but never misses out on the change to learn about the game.
“Some things I did well this summer were attacking the rim and using my size to my advantage.” Rayner is able to get by defenders and use his broad shoulders and strength to keep them on his hip and get to the basket to finish.
Dontez has been improving in his slashing game but also on his jumper from deep. As he continues to gain confidence in stepping in and knocking it down consistently, the driving lanes will widen for him. “Something I want to work on heading into my senior year is becoming a more vocal leader on and off the court.” Rayner realizes the opportunities that lie before him and he’s ready to take advantage. He wants to be the leader for his Lighthouse team on and off the court this year which will help him develop as a player as well.
Rayner currently holds an offer from Adrian College and is scheduled to take his official visit there tomorrow. He’s also receiving interest from Holy Cross College, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Purdue University Northwest, and Malone University. “I want to study criminal justice, sports medicine, or something that has to do with pychology.”
Dontez is also looking for a good fit. College visits to him are more than just the interest from the program, they are an opportunity for him to get a feel for the campus and atmosphere.
“I’m always willing to learn and take feedback because there’s so much more that I need to learn to perfect my craft.” Dontez is a student of the game who puts in the work behind closed doors to see the results.
Keep a close watch on Rayner this upcoming season as he looks to turn his list of interest into a list of offers. Intriguing prospect from the Indianapolis area whose frame and skill set is college ready.
