Prospect Spotlight: Eli Dowis (2019)
Maryville’s Eli Dowis is coming off a strong summer competing for MoKan Select and is gearing up for a strong junior season for the Spoofhounds.
At 6’3, 175-pounds, Dowis is an athletic player who is a strong finisher around the basket and is a solid rebounder. At the defensive end he brings versatility that allows him to defend multiple positions, guarding the 1-4.
Dowis says he has improved his outside shooting over the past year and he helped his team advance to the Class 3 state quarterfinals where they fell to Hogan Prep.
“We improved throughout the season as a team and beat a lot of bigger schools,” he said.
Also a standout on the football field, Dowis says the experience of competing for MoKan helped his confidence as he prepares for the season.
“From the begging the experience was pretty cool,” he said. “I’d never done anything like this before. It’s pretty cool to play against kids that are better than me and some will be future big names in college basketball.”
Dowis says he looks forward to playing to St. Joseph Lafayette this season.
“I look forward to playing St. Joe Lafayette and their point guard Diego Bernard,” he said. “Diego will be considered the best player in our conference (MEC).
“The other two names stick out to me are Damien Daniels from Hogan Prep and Latroy Harper from Penney.”
A fan of Kyrie Irving, Isiah Thomas and Russell Westbrook, Dowis says Bo Sundell has had the biggest influence on his basketball career.
“Bob started coaching me at the age of 7,” Dowis said. “He taught me all the fundamentals of basketball and how to play defense. I’ve also had help from a lot of good coaches that have helped shape me into the player that I am today.”
Dowis hasn’t received any offers, but says he has drawn some interest from college programs.
