Guthrie Brothers (2019) Shine with Pocket City (IN) AAU
The Mayfield High School Cardinals were an overtime away from reaching the Kentucky ‘Sweet Sixteen’ state tournament last season. Falling 71-77, Graves County beat out Mayfield, ending a season that saw the Cardinals go 23-11. You can bet that the game will remain in the back of Carson and Connor Guthrie’s head from now until Mach of 2018.
The Guthrie brothers were a staple on the Cardinals roster last season. As sophomores, Carson averaged 15.1 points and Connor averaged right at 16 points per game. Carson also averaged over 7 rebounds per game while Connor scorched the nets, shooting over 44% from the 3-point line (on over 200 attempts). It’s easy to compare an contrast their games, but the fact of the matter is this: both can play.
Their game carried over this summer while playing with Pocket City out of Indiana. Carson averaged just over 13 points and 7 rebounds per game while Connor averaged right at 12 points per game, including a 32 point game (6 made 3’s) in a win over the Illinois Heat at the Chicago Classic. Connor had exactly half of his teams points.
Carson has the size for an aspiring college guard. He can handle the ball well around the perimeter. He’s a tough kid who can do a number of different things on the court.
Connor loves scoring the ball, especially from beyond the arc. Off 380 shot attempts last season, 205 were from 3-point range. From the field, Connor shot 54.5%.
Look for the Guthrie brothers to help get Mayfield back to where they were last year, and possibly further. Graves County graduated shot-blocking talent Chris Voigt and the Cardinals return one of the more experienced rosters int he region.
