Basketball prospects shine on gridiron in opening week
Several high school basketball standouts who have been chronicled on this website are also excellent football players as well. Here is how some of those players performed during the opening week of football season last Friday night.
Ronnie Bell (Park Hill): The Division I basketball prospect had a huge opening night at wide receiver as he had 230 yards and three touchdowns in Park Hill’s 41-21 victory over Lee’s Summit North.
Diego Bernard (St. Joe Lafayette): A recent Northwest Missouri State basketball commit, Bernard is also a fine dual-threat quarterback. He amassed 401 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in a 48-14 victory over North Kansas City. Bernard passed for 328 yards and rushed for 73 yards.
Ian Torrey (Portageville): After a big summer playing with the SI Select, the 6’5″ Torrey started his senior season in football with a strong performance in the losing cause against Caruthersville. Torrey passed for 223 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 118 yards and another score.
Deandre Campbell (Parkway Central): The standout point guard is also a excellent receiver/defensive back for the Colts. On Friday night, Campbell had nine tackles and seven assists and also caught a five-yard touchdown pass in the Colts’ 20-7 victory over Parkway North in a battle of state-ranked district rivals.
