UA Select Super 16 Recap (Class of 2019 Point/Combo Guards)
Here is a look at the top Class of 2019 point guards and combo guards from last weekend’s UA Select Super 16 in Cape Girardeau, MO.
Evan Asleson 6’1″ Arsenal Hoops: Talented guard who led the Arsenal 16U group to the Final Four of the 17U Division. Evan’s forte is perimeter shooting, but he does a lot of other things to help his team win. He is a solid ball handler who did a nice job facilitating. His offensive game is very diversified as he can knock down 3-pointers off the catch and coming off screens. He is also showing some ability to get to the basket off the dribble and get buckets in the lane.
Derez Tipler 5’11” Rainmakers Premiere: The young guard has has a good combination of quickness, strength and a lot of go-go to his game. He was excellent with his dribble penetration with his go-to move being a hesitation dribble in which he explodes and leaves defenders standing still as he goes in for the layup. He compliments his drive game with a nice pull up jumper. He is also a very good defensive player who can apply the pressure.
Tarell Morris 5’9″ St. Louis Shooting Stars: Talented little guard with good quickness and the ability to run the pick and roll very efffectively. He has shifty moves to the basket and he can really get low and split the double team on the way to the basket, where he scored on layups and short jumpers. He can knock down 3-pointers if you back off of him. He can also distribute the basketball well and find open teammates.
Johnnie Walker 6’0″ Top Flight Elite: One of the most athletic guards that I watched during the weekend, Walker displayed his athleticism on several occasions with many slam dunks in transition. Contest at your own risk or you might be in the picture. He didn’t care. He was going for it anyway. He plays with a high motor as he attacks the basket and finishes well. He also showed some good court vision with many no-look passes in the half court offense.
Tayari Goodwin 5’8″ Arsenal Hoops: A quick little point guard who plays with a lot of savvy and poise on offense. I like his decision making as he plays under control, even when he gets into the open court in a faster pace game. He has a nice float game, plus he can really knock down open 3-pointers off the catch. He and teammate Asleson can play well together in two point-guard alignment because both can shoot it and pass it.
Caleb Oswald 5’10” Rainmakers Premiere: A tough combo guard who is not afraid to take on the challenge. He displayed good ball toughness as he fought off good defensive pressure on the way to the basket. He is a solid jump shooter who can make pull ups and 3-pointers alike. He is very good from long distance off the catch.
