UA Select Super 16 Recap (Class of 2018 Wings)
Here is a look at some of the top Class of 2018 wing players from last weekend’s UA Select Super 16 in Cape Girardeau, MO.
Justin Mathews-Williams 6’3″ St. Louis Shooting Stars: A versatile scoring threat with the offensive mentality to get buckets and the resourcefulness to accomplish the task. Williams has good size and strength, which enables him to attack the basket and score from many different angles. He was constantly putting pressure on the opposing defense. He handles the ball well and can create space to get to his spots and knock down jumpers. He led the Shooting Stars in scoring throughout the weekend.
Brendan Hardy 6’3″ SEMO Storm: An excellent 3-point shooter who also has the ability to score in different ways. He displayed knock down shooting ability from 3-point range throughout the weekend. He has did a nice job moving without the basketball and finding open spots for more buckets. I liked how he set up his man and cut to the basket. He is a versatile offensive threat with good size.
Tyon Grant-Foster 6’5″ Team KC: It was my first time seeing this long, thin impressive wing player from Schlagle, KS. He was very good at both ends of the floor. He caused a lot of problems on defense with his length as he got in passing lanes and stripped opposing ball handlers. He was also a big problem on offense with his ability to get to the basket with a quick first step and long stride to cover ground. His athletic ability enabled him to shoot over defenders and get off a good shot at almost any time. He was also very smooth in the open court.
C.J. Paul 6’3″ St. Louis Shooting Stars; One of the top 3-point shooters in the entire tournament, he was cash money when he was able to catch the ball with his feet set and ready. In one game, he knocked down seven of nine from 3-point range. In another game, he made four consecutive 3-pointers. On a team with some good penetrating guards, he did an excellent job of moving to the open spot and staying ready to shoot. He also got a chance to get to the basket and score a little bit off the drive.
R.J. Wright 6’1″ St. Louis Bearcats: An excellent 3-point shooter off the catch who helped lead the Bearcats to the tournament championship. He has been a consistent scoring threat throughout the grassroots season. He has been playing with a lot of confidence. He is also getting buckets in transition and swooping in for offensive rebounds to pick up more baskets off good hustle.
Hayden Sprenkel 6’2″ SEMO Storm: A true catch and shoot threat with range that extends well beyond the 3-point line. It was nothing for him to pull up from 25 feet and knock down a 3-pointer with ease. It is much easier for him to score with his Storm team with so many other shooters, than his high school team, where he sees a lot of special defenses. He still manages to score big numbers.
Jalen Williams 6’3″ Rainmakers Premiere: A talented wing player with good size and length who displayed a nice shooting touch from 3-point distance, especially off the catch. He is a solid ball handler who can also rebound the basketball and find open teammates with good passing. He will be the primary perimeter threat for a Saxony Lutheran team that has emerged as one of the top Class 3 programs in the state.
Kobe Cooper 6’0″ Beastmode: An athletic, physical wing guard who plays hard and stays in attack mode throughout the game. He gets a lot done when he’s getting to the basket and finishing in traffic. He plays much bigger than his size because of his motor. He is also an excellent rebounder for a guard.
Wade Schifferius 5’11” Dig Deep:
