Prospect Watch: Ian Torrey (2018)
Class of 2018 forward Ian Torrey of Portageville is a talented all-around athlete with a number of nice choices facing him in the near future.
The 6’5″ Torrey is one of the top basketball prospects in Southeast Missouri, but that is just the beginning. Torrey is also an excellent receiver in football and a top baseball player as well. He is getting recruiting interest in all three sports.
“I like all three sports,” Torrey said. “It’s pretty cool because not a lot of people get a chance to excel in three sports. I’ve been pretty fortunate with that.”
Torrey’s versatility in athletics extends to the basketball court as he plays all five positions for Portageville, a Class 2 program with a rich winning tradition. He was an Class 2 All-District and All-State performer as a junior after putting up an impressive season-long stat line.
As a junior, Torrey averaged 21.2 points, 13.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.6 steals and nearly two blocks a game while shooting 51 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range. On top of that, he spent much of the season as Portageville’s primary ball handler.
“I think it helps a lot to play a lot of positions,” Torrey said. “I’ve been working to improve on everything from my shooting, ball handling and passing. I want to keep getting better as an all-around player.”
Torrey has spent his summer playing with the SI Select 17U team during the grassroots season. On a team with a lot of size, Torrey gets to spend a lot of time playing point guard, where he can showcase his versatility. He enjoyed a good weekend of games at the recent UA Select Super 16 in Cape Girardeau, MO.
“It has been a good experience playing for this team,” Torrey said. “It has really helped my skills and I have learned a lot this summer.”
