Oregon Team Camp Wrap Up
There has been a direct connection between the on court success of the Oregon Ducks basketball program in recent years and the quality of teams attending their team camp. This year was no different as roughly 75 teams from around the west convened on Eugene for a weekend of high level hoops. Prep Hoops Oregon took a look at the teams and players who stood out, surprised, and succeeded while playing at Matthew Knight Arena.
Best Team: Southridge HS; Beaverton, OR
In a very competitive field, the Skyhawks stood out amongst their peers. Arguably the tallest team in Oregon, Southridge features the front court of 6’8 Filip Fullerton and 6’7 Bradley Bickler, both talented 2018 big men. 2019 guard Zach Galvin is emerging as an all league level player and the Skyhawks added a nice piece in 2018 sharpshooting wing Bo Quinlan who transferred from 2A Life Christian.
Best Player: Elijah Pepper – 6’2 Guard (2019/Selah HS (WA))
The explosive scoring guard put on a display throughout the weekend while leading his school against some of the best big school programs from Oregon & southwest Washington. Coming off a prep season that saw him average 29 points a game, Pepper put in some monster performances including a 30+ point showing against West Salem, a likely Top 5 team in Oregon. A physical combo guard that has a great feel for the game and can score from multiple levels, already being pursued by the majority of the D1 programs on the west coast.
Best Duo: Mason Miller & Isaac Lange (2019/Thurston HS)
After a highly successful 15 year run under longtime coach Doug Piquette, Thurston has struggled as of late. Those fortunes look to be changing behind the talented inside/out duo of Miller & Lange. Miller a true physical back to the basket big and Lange a quick combo guard that can score or distribute as needed both played well for the Colts and have emerged as Top 10 level talents in the class of 2019.
Other Top 10 Performers:
Jaylen Thompson – 6’2 Wing (2018/West Linn HS)
The unassuming Thompson put on a shooting display before tweaking his ankle during the 5th game. Longtime West Linn score keeper Doug Fiala had him shooting an amazing 25/37 on 3’s, an incredible 68% clip from deep. As usual, he also played well defensively, routinely drawing the opponents best perimeter player.
Dominic McGarvey – 6’7 Post (2019/Sheldon HS)
The fast rising post who spent most of last season on Sheldon’s jv team, followed up a strong spring AAU with Team Flight by putting forth a strong effort at camp. A long athletic post with decent range for a big has quickly placed himself on the short list of guys to watch in the class of 2019.
Filip Fullerton – 6’8 Post (2018/Southridge HS)
Fullerton continued his rapid improvement from last season. Noticeably bigger and stronger with a much improved shot. His continued improvement will be key for Southridge if they are to be serious state title contenders.
Bostyn Holt – 6’5 Guard (2018/Roosevelt HS)
Holt’s length and versatility were on display over the weekend as he handled the primary point guard duties for the Roughriders. An improving offensive game complements his ability to guard multiple positions effectively. An intriguing prospect to watch next season for a much improved Roosevelt team.
Kyle Greeley – 6’4 Wing (2018/West Salem HS)
Greeley played well all weekend and lived up to the hype that has earned him serious attention from multiple D1 schools in the west. An uncanny knack for scoring and offensive feel continue to be his biggest assets.
Bradley Bickler – 6’7 Forward (2018/Southridge HS)
Another talented athlete for the predicted Metro League Champs, Bickler saw limited minutes last season but has really come in to his own the last 3 months. A versatile defender whose length and lateral quickness are elite for someone his size. Bickler can legitimately guard all five spots on the floor. Effective in transition, his ceiling is high and we’ll be watching closely to see how he progresses.
Alex Schumacher – 6’2 Guard (2019/Skyview HS (WA))
Athletic guard who always seemed to make the play that got Skyview over the top. Played very well in comeback victory over West Linn, has really enhanced his ability to finish at the rim. High ceiling player who continues to improve each week. Will play for Team FAST this summer.
Zach Galvin – 6’1 Guard (2019/Southridge HS)
The talented combo guard appears to be putting it all together. Made a lot of necessary plays that coaches appreciated over the course of the weekend. Has the ability to shoot, score off the dribble, and lead a team as needed. Also showed flashes of being a quality perimeter defender.
