UMSL Shootout Recap (Class of 2019 Forwards)
Here is a look at the top Class of 2019 forwards from last Friday’s University of Missouri-St. Louis Shootout:
Josh Wallace 6’5″ CBC: The energetic power forward was one of the most impressive frontcourt players in the event during the day. He always plays with a high motor, but his productivity level was just as high on this day. He had one dominating three to four minute stretch against Cardinal Ritter where he scored in the post, dunked in transition, blocked shots and seemed to grab every rebound. He has developed a little jump hook in the lane over the left shoulder that is tough to stop. He just plays hard and runs the court at every opportunity.
Will Shumpert 6’4″ CBC: An impressive athlete who was very good around the basket throughout the day. He was active on the baseline and always in position to grab offensive rebounds and score on put-backs. He gives you effort, toughness and some explosive leaping ability. That’s a good combination to have for an undersized power forward. Will also spent some time on the perimeter and put up a few jumpers on Friday.
DeJuan Young 6’4″ Trinity: A long and bouncy power forward who was a bundle of energy on the court throughout the day. His offensive skills are still a work in progress, but he played with great effort and a big motor every minute he was out there, which led to a lot of rebounds, blocked shots and some run outs for easy layups. He’s quick on defense, which makes him ideal to defend a pick and roll and he stays above the rim.
Jack Buford 6’5″ Lutheran North: A big physical forward who goes at nearly 300 pounds, Buford is a collegiate prospect in football as a lineman, but he has good basketball skills as well. He moves pretty well for his size and he can score around the basket when he gets the ball down low. He also enjoys the action on the perimeter where he will hoist up a 3-pointer and make his share. He also scored on a couple of very physical dribble drives to the bucket.
Jonah McDowell 6’4″ Kirkwood: A long lefty with a nice stroke from 3-point range, Jonah was a very good compliment to Kirkwood’s quick, penetrating guards because of his ability to stretch the floor from 3-point range. He has a smooth release on his shot. I also like his size on the wing as well.
