UMSL Shootout Recap (Class of 2018 Forwards)
Here is a look at some of the top Class of 2018 forwards from last Friday’s University of Missouri-St. Louis Shootout:
A.J. Sommer 6’5″ Parkway South: The versatile forward enjoyed a very solid day as he wore many hats for the Patriots. He scored around the basket on drives and short jumpers, but he is also a good facilitator from the forward position. He could handle the ball and he is a good passer, especially from the high post where he did a good job of finding open cutters. A.J. is also a willing and able defender who guarded multiple positions.
Yahuza Rasas 6’6″ St. Mary’s: The athletic power forward was his usual productive self around the basket as he scored, grabbed rebounds and blocked his share of shots. Rasas is also making an effort to work on his perimeter game as well. He spent a lot of time handling the ball outside and he also took several jumpers, including a few 3-pointers. If that part of his game develops, it will enhance his recruiting.
Cason Suggs 6’6″ Washington: The thin hard-working forward had some very good moments during the day. In his first game against Westminster, he grabbed five offensive rebounds in the second half and converted them all for 10 points to lead his team to a victory. Offensively, he is comfortable facing the basket as he knocked down several high-arching jumpers from 12-15 feet.
Dominic Mitchell 6’3″ St. Mary’s: A versatile forward who is an ideal high school all-purpose player because he can do some many things offensively. With his team missing their two starting guards, Mitchell took up much of the ball handling duties, which he is very capable of doing. He scored on a variety of runners and bank shots, plus he displayed his crafty inside game.
Bre’on Mosby 6’5″ Cardinal Ritter: A solid post player with good length who put in some good work around the basket. He displayed a few impressive offensive moves in the post as he scored on jump hooks and also got buckets while using his opposite hand.
Mike Thoenen 6’5″ Westminster: An aggressive post player who played with a lot of energy and intensity. He was very good on the defensive end as he worked hard to deny post entry passes and he blocked several shots. I liked how he also looked to block out people for rebounding position.
