Prospect Watch: Leon Perry (2018)
Class of 2018 forward Leon Perry on Confluence Academy was one of the big breakthrough players during the 2016-17 season.
The 6’6″ Perry was a productive scorer and rebounder during his first two years as a varsity player, but his numbers skyrocketed during an excellent 2017 season, where he was among the leaders in the St. Louis metro area in a number of categories.
As a junior, Perry averaged 27.6 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.4 blocks while shooting 60 percent from the field and 41 percent from 3-point range. After being an excellent performer around the basket for the first two years of his career, Perry added another dimension to his game as a junior as he handled the ball more and improved his shooting from the perimeter. Not only can he score in the post and rebound and block shots and a high rate, Perry can now take players off the dribble and knock down jumpers.
“The key to my success was to keep working on my game and keep gaining confidence,” Perry said. “This summer, I’ll be working a lot on my dribbling and shooting because that was such a big improvement for me. I just want to keep getting better.”
Perry’s exploits have helped Confluence Academy reach new height as a program. Last season, Confluence won 17 games and played for a district championship for the first time, losing to a powerful St. Mary’s team.
“Confluence is a great school to me and I’ve always felt like I could make a dynasty over here,” he said. “A lot of kids are real tough in the city. They have hear and we all trust each other on and off the court.”
Perry does not have any scholarship offers at this point, but a number of Division I and Division II programs have been tracking his progress as he continues to develop into a complete all-around player.
