Prospect Spotlight: Sam DeVault (2019)
The end of June is coming close and we are about to get headed into the hectic month of July. However, an early surprise came to Evansville Memorial (IN) wing Sam DeVault on Thursday.
The 6’8 forward was the recipient of not just one, but two Division I offers. First, the in-state program, IUPUI, came with an offer. Later that afternoon, it was Billy Wright and Western Illinois who offered.
These are DeVault’s first two offers. The UA G3 Grind 2019 standout has been playing exceptionally well this spring and showing the promise of his talent on the Spring circuits. His size and ability to shoot on the perimeter make him an intriguing prospect. Right now, he’s more of just shooter but has shown some ability to be a rim protector.
On the UAA circuit this spring, Sam shot 55% from the field and 42% from three. He’s got some length to him and when on the perimeter, you are going to struggle to put someone out on him if he decides to shoot the ball. He’s best off the catch but his ball handling is solid enough to create a bit. Short term, he will create along the perimeter and continue to get clean looks. Long term, that ball handling should allow him to drive and add another dimension to his game.
This was highlighted in his game against 1Nation 2019. DeVault went off for 24 points, shooting 10-13 from the field and 3-5 from distance. Those are the sort of games that could become more of a normal outing for him later in his career. That is the hope that programs like IUPUI and Western Illinois saw this Spring.
DeVault will finish out the summer with UA G3 Grind 2019 and should become a much bigger part of an up-and-coming Evansville Memorial team this winter.
