Prospect Spotlight: Mekhi Lairy (2018)
One of the smallest guards in the state might also be the state’s toughest in Evansville Bosse’s Mekhi Lairy. He’s been waiting on college programs to take notice and finally, the last couple weeks have done just that.
There have been two runs of offers for the 5’8 guard out of the Pocket. First, it was Kentucky Wesleyan, Indiana Wesleyan, and UT-Martin. Then it was Evansville and Miami (OH). With five offers now in hand, Lairy has plenty of options and might see some more come with July right around the corner.
Lairy made the switch to play with Indiana Elite 2018 this spring and he’s been playing a different level of competition. He’s put up 7.8 ppg while shooting 40.4% from the field. He’s also shooting 83.3% from the free throw line. He’s a guy that is always going to draw a lot of fouls with his size and aggressive nature.
He will have to take some more time to get used to the size and speed of the Gauntlet as he has thrown a few too many turnovers, however, he leads the team in assists with 2.0 assists per game and 7 steals so far. He’s not a kid that will back down from a challenge so it will be interesting to see if he can improve this July.
Before then, Lairy will take a couple of visits to some local programs. One of which will be today as he heads to one of his latest offers in Miami (OH). New head coach Jack Owens has already made Indiana a point of focus and Lairy is one of his first targets in the 2018 class. The following day he will head to SIU-Edwardsville. They have yet to offer but based on how things are going and the level, it wouldn’t be a shock if he left that visit with an offer as well.
