Prospect Spotlight: Marlon Taylor (2018)
Marlon Taylor – 6’5” | SF | South Bend Riley | Class of 2018
Marlon is an intriguing prospect in the 2018 class because of his versatility and skill set as an athletic 6’5” forward. Taylor plays his school ball at South Bend Riley and AAU with Spiece Indy Heat Red. He has shown maturity and growth in his game in the past few years.
“I’ve been playing well this spring with my team. Learning how and when I need to help contribute.” Marlon has been a crucial piece to his Indy Heat Red group for the past two seasons and has seen his role expand just as his skill set has expanded.
Now that the month of June is here, players have been working out with their high school teams and attending camps and shootouts. South Bend Riley just recently went through a coaching change.
“Been playing decent with our new coach, Eric Brand. I’m learning the coaching system that he had for our team and his style of play.”
It seems like it will be a smooth transition to new Head Coach Eric Brand. Brand is from the South Bend area and played basketball at the collegiate level.
“I’m most excited about playing with friends that I’ve known for some time and also having a new coach with excitement and dedication to making his players better and helping pursue our dreams of being college athletes.”
The learning doesn’t stop with the new coach though. Taylor has taken matters into his own hands and is working on his game in the off-season to have a successful senior season. “I’m currently working on understanding the game more, having better ball handling, better vision, and being a leader and good teammate.”
Marlon has shown improvement in his jump shot and his range has increased because of it. He has always been a good slasher and can finish above the rim with the best of them. His ball handling has been something that he has been focusing on and it will help him get to the rim in one on one situations this year. With his next-level athleticism and length, he finishes well around the rim and is an outstanding rebounder for his size.
Marlon wants to study BioEngineering in college and wants to have the opportunity to play basketball. “I’m looking for a good environment and being brought into the family that has been together for some time. I want to join a program with a history of winning.”
“As a player, I am a team player and like to make those around me better. I like to get others open and want to be a special player of the game of basketball.” No doubt he has the drive and passion for the game and he is just starting to tap into his potential on the court.
Keep an eye on Marlon Taylor this upcoming season as he looks to step into that leadership role for the Wildcats. He’s poised to have his best season yet coming off a 19-3 record last year.
