Prospect Spotlight: Jaylen Minor (2018)
Jaylen Minor – 6’3” | G | Evansville Bosse High School
The Class of 2018 has some intriguing guard prospects and Jaylen Minor is one of them. The long, athletic guard plays alongside Mekhi Lairy in the backcourt for Evansville Bosse and is really starting to realize his potential. He did not play with anyone in the spring session of AAU but may be running with G3 Grind on the Under Armour Association Circuit come July.
During the month of June, Minor has had the time to work with his teammates in preparation for next season. Jaylen played well at the IPFW Shootout ( https://prephoops.com/2017/06/ipfw-shootout-2018-standouts/ ) and has not looked back.
“The month of June went very good with Bosse. I feel like we got a lot accomplished. I have been playing very well I think. I feel like I polished my game up a little bit more.”
Minor has always attacked the rim aggressively. With his length and athleticism at the guard position, he finished very well at the rim. His ball skills, including his court vision, have shown improvement from last season.
“I’ve been attacking the rim better and my shot has become better. I handle the ball better and my defense has become solid.”
When asked about the strengths in his game, this is what Minor had to say, “my strengths are defense, passing, getting my teammates open and getting to the rim.”
As Jaylen continues to work on his jumper, he will continue to become a harder person to guard. He is currently more comfortable as a creating and slashing guard but has been working on stretching the floor with the long ball. “Being in the back court with Mekhi Lairy makes me have to work on my corner three and passing skills.”
Minor has shown that he can guard some of the best at the guard position and takes pride in that end of the floor. His quick hands and ability to read offensive tendencies make him a tenacious defender. Not only does he cause deflections in passing lanes, he is also good at stripping the ball handler and starting the break.
Along with working on his jumper, Jaylen is looking to add strength to his long frame. “Really I have been trying to get stronger. I have worked on my ball handling and shot the most.”
Although he currently doesn’t have any offers, Jaylen is starting to turn heads with his impact on both ends of the floor. He’s looking to potentially have a strong month of July before the high school season comes around.
Jaylen will be visiting Philander Smith College here soon. He has also been contacted and receiving interst from Lipscomb University and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Minor is a player who is putting in the work to expand his impact on the floor. He and Lairy will be a backcourt to keep an eye on this upcoming season. His skill set is quickly improving and his effort level is never anything to doubt. Jaylen Minor is an exciting Class of 2018 guard prospect.
