Notebook: Grand Park Fieldhouse League
The month of June is underway and last week we took in a lot of basketball from around the state. One of our stops was at the Grand Park Fieldhouse for their High School League. We put together a notebook from the event.
- Avon looks like they could be pretty solid this year. They won’t compete for a State Title but they have a bit more talent than you would think. Most come as wings and forwards with guys like Zach Rinehart, Nathan Vernon, and Travis Sturm. The thing that was most noticable is who is going to be their point guard. If they can figure that out over the summer and fall that could go a long way to their development. This might be the biggest team for Avon in recent memory.
- Guerin Catholic could really do well as they drop back down to 3A this season. They have two really good forwards in Zach Munson and Jack Hansen, both of which can shoot the ball from deep. They also have a creative guard in Kian Sills who could be pretty impactful. We also liked the impact of Drew Thieme as a low post scorer to compliment Hansen who likes to play more on the perimeter. They have four pretty good guys right now.
- Cathedral might have a chance to be really good this year. They return a ton with James Franklin, Jarron Coleman, and Hunter Jackson. Look for Ross Welch and Justin Hensley to really step up this year. Welch has added some strength and can play inside-out while Hensley has been one of the best shooters we have seen this spring. You also get Jayden Edwards and Grant Taueg to add to the Varsity roster and you have enough pieces with plenty of scoring ability. Oh, and they have a potential transfer in Armaan Franklin. Franklin has been outstanding this spring with his play for UA G3 Grind 2019. He’s such a good scoring threat now with size, length, and athleticism.
- Kokomo has a new head coach in Bobby Wonnell who came over from Indianapolis Tindley. He just got done winning a State Championship with the 1A program and now will take over a Kokomo team that has some talent as well. Most notably Anthony Barnard. The 6’5 wing looks really good right now. Long, athletic, and impactful on both ends of the floor. They also have Trajan Deckard and Jeremy Baker on the guard spots. They don’t have a ton of size but Barnard could kill some mismatches this year for them.
- University could have the pieces to be competitive this year. They might not be a tall team but they have guys like Zach Hodgin, Josh Watson, David Howard, and Foster Flamion. For a 1A team, that is pretty solid. Watson has grown and could be more impactful inside. Hodgin has become a better ball handler which would go a long ways for this team. If Howard and Flamion can give some sort of inside presence, that could be the key to University really competing in 1A this season.
