IAABO Team Camp Recap (Class of 2018 Guards/Wings)
Here is a look at some of the top Class of 2018 guards/wings from this week’s IAABO Team Camp at Francis Howell Central High in St. Charles, MO:
Darious Thomas 6’0″ Fort Zumwalt South: At this time last year, Thomas was out of action with a broken hand. He looked strong and healthy this time around as he attacked the basket with his usual gusto. He is strong and athletic and does a great job of drawing contact and finishing with buckets and three-point plays. He also made several nice plays with the pass as he found open teammates in transition for easy baskets.
Kyle Younge 5’10” Jennings: A point guard who has the ability to score and take big shots for his team. Younge can play either guard spot with equal effectiveness. He does a good job of getting the ball to his teammates. When it is time to score, he has the ability to get buckets at all three levels. Younge has a nice stroke from 3-point range and a good float game to boot.
Drew Deters 6’0″ Troy: A very solid point guard who plays a very unselfish game. He is physically built and he is very strong with the ball as he did an excellent job of warding off pressure defense. Drew can muscle his way to the basket and get buckets, but he prefers to pass and set up his teammates. He fed the post well and delivered some nice back door passes to cutting teammates.
Jake Frederick 5’11” Orchard Farm: In the game I watched, this young man played with an extreme amount of drive. His pace was good as he looked to push the ball at nearly every opportunity. He had several nice finishes on the break and coast to coast drives. He escaped pressure well and found open teammates, plus he knocked down a few open 3-pointers off the catch.
Jake Hampton 5’10” Fort Zumwalt West: A solid point guard who had an excellent feel for the game. He was playing with a lot of younger players on this day, but he displayed good leadership, poise and court savvy. I liked how he handled the ball and delivered nice passes to make the game easy for his younger teammates. He also showed a good pull-up jumper and 3-point range.
Nick Bazzell 6’2″ St. Charles West: A good shooting guard who had a big game in a victory over Lutheran (SC) that I watched. Nick displayed some versatility on the offensive end as he knocked down a number of jumpers from 3-point range. He also got downhill on the dribble and scored on some nice And 1’s on drives to the bucket. He’s a very solid ball handler and passer.
