Recruiting: Jontay Porter commits to Missouri
Five-star post player Jontay Porter has give a verbal commitment to the University of Missouri. Porter made the announcement on his Twitter account on Monday evening.
The 6’11” 240-pound Porter became the second member of his family to commit to the Tigers this spring. Older brother Michael Porter, Jr., the No. 1 player in the country in the Class of 2017, signed with Mizzou in April.
The only suspense with Jontay Porter is when he will matriculate to Mizzou. He is currently ranked among the top 10 prospects in the Class of 2018, but he also has the option of reclassifying into the Class of 2017, thus joining his brother at Mizzou next year to complete a historic recruiting class for the Tigers. In an interview with Dave Matter of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Porter has indicated that he has made his decision of his future plans, but is not ready to make a formal announcement about when he will play for Mizzou.
During the spring, Porter has been playing for the MoKan Elite 17U team in the Nike EYBL. He has been one of the top players i the league in leading MoKan to a 9-3 record after three sessions. Through 12 games, Porter is averaging 18.1 points, 12.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.9 blocks while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range. Porter was named the Most Valuable Player of the EYBL’s Session II in Indianapolis after leading MoKan Elite to a perfect 4-0 weekend.
As a junior at Nathan Hale in Seattle, WA, Porter joined brother Michael in leading Hale to a state championship and a No. 1 ranking in the USA. Porter spent his first two years of high school at Father Tolton in Columbia. The Trailblazers won the Class 3 state championship in 2016.
Should Porter decide to come to Missouri, he would join a Top Five recruiting class that has been put together by first-year coach Cuonzo Martin. That class includes the No. 1 player in Michael Porter, Jr., 6’10 four-star center Jeremiah Tillmon of East St. Louis (IL), 6’3″ guard Kassius Robertson, a graduate transfer from Canisius, 6’3″ four-star point guard Blake Harris from Raleigh, NC 6’1″ point guard C.J. Roberts from North Richland Hills, TX.
