Prospect Watch: Trent Lyles (2018)
Class of 2018 guard Trent Lyles of Sedalia Sacred Heart led the Gremlins to a fourth-place finish in the Missouri Class 2 state tournament this past season.
As exciting as it was for Lyles to lead his team to the Final Four, the fourth-place finish left him hungry for bigger and better things for his senior year in 2018.
“Our goal is to win the whole thing,” Lyles said. “We plan on winning the state championship. Anything less will be considered a disappointment. Making it to the Final Four this year meant a lot because we weren’t able to do it my first two years. We didn’t even get out of districts my sophomore year, so we were blessed to make it all the way to the Final Four.
A 6-0 point guard, Lyles averaged more than 20 points a game as a junior to lead the Gremlins to a xx record. His ability to score and facilitate the ball earned him all-state honors and some recruiting attention from the likes of Nebraska-Omaha and a few other Division II programs.
Lyles is currently playing for the Missouri Team Carroll 17U team during the grassroots season. He is one of the many talented guards that dot the Team Carroll squad that has enjoyed a lot of success during the spring, including the championship of the Nike Indy Live Tournament.
“It was an adjustment at first playing with five guards, but we have started to mold together pretty well,” Lyles said. “We are getting used to play with each other and it is turning out pretty well.”
Lyles is a talented offensive player with strong handles and the ability to get in the lane and score on short jumpers. His game has been enhanced by an improved 3-point shot, which was really on display at the recent Jayhawk Invitational, where he hit 20 treys in five games.
“I’ve been working on my shooting quite a bit,” Lyles said. “I have really been focusing on that part of the game.”
