Prospect Watch: Levi Woods (2018)
Class of 2018 point guard Levi Woods of Puxico had one clear goal in mind once the regular season ended in early March. That was to get stronger.
The 5’10” Woods has been a regular in the school’s weight room and he has already seen the positive results during the opening weeks of grassroots season as a member of the SEMO Bulls 17U team.
“I’ve already gained 15 pounds since the end of the season,” said Woods. “I’m up to 170 pounds and I can already see the difference. I have a lot more explosion on the summer circuit. I’ve been able to finish much better through contact.”
The added physical strength should only present more problems for opposing teams that have been trying to stop Woods, who has been one of the top offensive threats in Southeast Missouri for much of his career. As a junior, Woods averaged nearly 25 points a game and has scored nearly 1,300 points in his career.
Woods’ primary strength as a player is his ability to shoot the basketball. He is a potent 3-point shooter with a quick release and the ability to get off his jumper off the dribble and in transition. He was capable of some big scoring nights as well as shown by his 36-point performance against South Pemiscot in the Bloomfield Tournament. Woods nailed seven 3-pointers on that night in Puxico’s 67-60 victory.
“A lot of my success as a shooter comes from getting up a six in the morning every day and getting up shots before school,” Woods said. “I have put a lot of hard work in on my shooting.”
As Woods prepares for his senior season, he has his sights set on helping his team improve on Puxico’s 10-14 record and compete for a district championship.
“We have a lot of people back and we are working hard,” Woods said. “We are looking forward to next season.”
