New Faces: 2018 Prospects
With the tailend of the spring AAU circuit about over, we are ready to take a look over some of our notes and dive into some names. This round is all about new faces. Who have we discovered? Who is worthy of bringing their name to light? Here are some guys in the class of 2018.
Logan Smith – 6’2 | SG | Mt. Vernon-Fortville (IN) | IE Central 2018 – Logan is an athletic wing with some skill to him. Really good off the bounce where he can drive or pull-up from three. Will need to play more under control at times but the skill is there for him to be an offensive weapon. Like what he could be on defense with added energy. Showed good rebounding ability.
Maurion Martin – 6’3 | SG | Portage (IN) | IE Region 2018 – Martin is a tall guard with skill and handles. He’s not going to be the flashiest player but he’s really creative when driving as he can cut and slash really well. Has a big body that can take contact on the way to the rim. Can put up points pretty quickly. Like his handles for his size and think it could be possible to play him on the ball if needed.
Chandler Goodwin – 5’11 | PG | Marquette Catholic (IN) | IE Region 2018 – Goodwin is a smaller guard with a compact frame but some strength already on. Has good quickness and will push the tempo especially on counters. Can get into the lane to make plays. More often will look to pass it off that look to finish but he did show that with his speed, he can finish at the rim with some consistency.
Noah Mahoney – 6’4 | SF | Chesterton (IN) | IE Region 2018 – Noah is an aggressive wing with some length. Showed a really good run-down block in transition. The best though is his handles and willingness to play in the open floor with the ball in his hands. Didn’t show any shooting ability in our first look at him but will watch soon to check on that.
Xavier Hines – 6’3 | SF | Noblesville (IN) | Northside Spartans 2018 – Xavier is a big, strong wing with skill to play on the wing but a body to battle down low. Isn’t real fast with the ball in his hands but can shoot and be physical when in the post. Can be a really good rebounder with time and should be aggressive enough to search out offense.
Michael Jerrell – 6’6 | C | 2018 | Indianapolis Pike (IN) | Indiana PROS 2018 – Jerrell is a big, strong post who looks like he has cleaned up the frame a bit. Needs a little bit more but is now a guy that looks like he could impact a college program. Starting to impact games for PROS at times now with all of their star power.
Kobe Clancy – 6’3 | SG | 2018 | Indianapolis Scecina (IN) | Indiana Legends 2018 – Clancy is a long, skinny forward with enough length to impact the game on both ends of the floor. Likes to play uptempo and with that, can create in the open floor. Shot from distance is pretty solid as well.
Ethan Helton – 6’3 | SG | 2018 | Eastern Greene (IN) | Team Blaze Select 2018 – Helton is a tall guard with some strength to his frame. Plays with energy and can make plays that way. Lacks a ton of scoring ability but has enough paired with handles that make him a solid guard option.
Caleb Norris – 6’0 | SG | 2018 | Edgewood (IN) | Southern Indiana Select 2018 – Norris is a big, strong guard who gives great energy and toughness. Didn’t show a ton of offense so that is a question that still needs answered but he’s got the motor you want.
Langston Stallings – 6’4 | SF | 2018 | Bowman Academy (IN) | SYF Players 2018 – Stallings is a big wing with some solid scoring ability as a shooter and driver. His size and strength on the wing provide some interesting possibilities. Could be a guy that could really take off this summer if he gets hot.
