Kansas City Classic Recap: (Class of 2018 Point/Combo Guards)
Here is a look at some of the top Class of 2018 point guards and combo guards from last weekend’s Kansas City Classic in Lawrence, KS.
R.J. Lawrence 5’11” MO Team Carroll: Lawrence averaged more than 20 points a game and was one of the most impressive guards during the weekend. He displayed some deep shooting range while also getting to the rim and finishing with both hands off the bounce. Lawrence dropped 20 points in a half against a good Kingdom Hoops Elite team. He also had a couple of games where he facilitated well as he fed the post and created open looks with his dribble penetration.
Kenny Chambers 6’1″ MBA Team Flight Black: A strong point guard who was very good in the open court with his ability to change speeds. He did a great job of accelerating on the fast break past flat footed defenders on the way to the basket for easy layups. Kenny did an excellent job of facilitating and finding open teammates as he enjoyed a couple of games of nearly 10 assists. When left open, he was capable of knocking down 3-pointers.
Brandon Frederick 5’10” St. Louis Bearcats: The small and quick combo guard put up some impressive shooting totals during the weekend. He made eight 3-pointers in one game in which he sparked a rally from an 18-point deficit for a win. He followed up with seven more 3-pointers in a Gold Division bracket win. His shooting ability is enhanced by his quickness and ability beat opposing defenders off the dribble with his first step.
Mason Alexander 6’2″ Kansas Play ‘N Pray: A smooth lefty to plays the game with a lot of confidence and swag. He displayed the ability to score at all three levels with excellent 3-point shooting range and a nice pull up jumper from the mid-range. His tight handles enable him to create good shots for himself from almost anywhere. He also did a nice job of setting up teammates for open shots with his passing ability.
Diego Bernard 5’10” KC Pacers Blue: Bernard did not play in Sunday’s bracket play as he was resting an ankle injury, but he played well during pool play. He is very athletic and aggressive when attacking the basket off the dribble or getting after an opposing ball handler on the defensive end. He also continues to shoot the ball well from 3-point range off the catch.
Amaun Ryan 6’0″ NdaGym: A quick combo guard who plays the game with a lot of energy and activity, which results in him making a lot of plays. He can attack the basket in a halfcourt set for buckets or get out and finish well in a transition game. He has good 3-point shooting range if defenders back off of him. He is tough and fearless. Also excels in football and baseball.
