St. Louis Spring Showdown Recap (Class of 2020 Guards/Wings)
Here is a look at some of the top Class of 2020 guards from last weekend’s St. Louis Spring Showdown:
Jaylen Boyd 5’10” St. Louis Warriors: Talented young point guard who led the Warriors to the 16U championship game. He displayed the ability to facilitate and make him teammates better and get buckets during the guts of a close game. On Sunday, Boyd showed has take-over ability as he averaged 20 points in the semifinal and championship games. The quick southpaw has the ability to change speeds to get to the basket and finish with twisting drives and shots. He also knocked down several mid range jumpers off the dribble under pressure.
Dayton Turner 5’9″ T.E.M. Select: A tough little guard who led his team to the 15U championship. He plays with a lot of heart of intensity which belies his small frame. He drives hard to the basket and was not afraid to go inside in the land of the trees. His dribble penetration and passing ability opened things up for teammates and he found them for easy buckets. Turner also put in a strong effort on the defensive end as he made himself quite a pest throughout the weekend.
Zack Jones 6’1″ ACB: A very intriguing and unique young guard who has a very nice skill set. The thick-bodied guard is comfortable anywhere on the floor, whether he’s on the point, at the wing or in the low post. He has slick handles and excellent court vision, which set up open teammates with regularity. He was also an effective low post player where he used his big body to get position to score or find open teammates. Jones also knocked down his share of open 3-pointers.
Corey Cuschnon 5’9″ ACB: A small point guard who had a productive weekend with his crafty set of skills. He has a strong body who does a nice job of staying low and getting to his spots on the floor. He was also very comfortable playing off the ball with his ability to knock down open 3-pointers and score on drives and mid-range jumpers.
Alex Brinkmann 6’0″ T.E.M. Select:This young guard was really an X-factor in his team’s run to the 15U championship as an all-purpose performer all weekend. What was most impressive about him is that he always seemed to be around the ball, which is the sign of a high basketball IQ. During bracket play, he did an excellent job hustling for offensive rebounds and turning them into baskets.
Kayden Jackson 6’1″ Machine Elite: Talented young shooting guard who played up in the 16U Division in the weekend. He shot the ball well from the perimeter, snuck into the high post to knock down short jumpers and finished well in transition. He was also good at darting into the passing lanes to create steals and transition buckets.
Christian Banks 5’11” Team Isaiah: Talented southpaw combo guard who led his team to the 15U championship game. He is strong, quick and very aggressive in his pursuits to get to the basket. Has the ability to change speeds with the dribble, but he was at his best when he was going to the hoop at full tilt.
