Class 1 State Semifinals Standouts
The Class 1 state championship will be decided today when Advance takes on Walnut Grove in what promises to be one entertaining shootout. Advance defeated North Andrew 88-78 in the semifinals while Walnut Grove defeated Glasgow 69-63 to punch its ticket to the championship game.
Here is a look at some of the top standouts from Thursday’s semifinals games:
Armani Vermillion 6’0″ Advance (2018): The talented combo guard scored a game-high 38 points in the victory over North Andrew. Vermillion is a perfect fit for Advance’s up-tempo attack as he loves to attack the basket off the dribble. He is also excellent in the transition game as he scored layup and layup against North Andrew. He also grabbed seven rebounds.
Logan Thomazin 6’2″ Walnut Grove (2018): The talented sharpshooter scored 32 points in WG’s victory over Glasgow. Thomazin showcased the sweet stroke from 3-point range, but he also scored in a number of different ways, from drives to post-ups to getting himself to the free throw line. He is the school’s career scoring leader and he is just a junior. Think about that for a second.
Ryan Hughes 5’11” North Andrew (2018): The point guard had an excellent game against Advance with 19 points and five assists. He kept the Cardinals in the game with his 3-point shooting, making five of seven from long distance. He handled the ball well and dropped some impressive dimes.
Kennedy Davis 6’4″ Glasgow (2017): The 230-pound powerhouse was a force inside with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Walnut Grove. Davis had to face double teams all game as Walnut Grove packed in a zone defense, but he displayed some good footwork and nice touch around the basket to have a productive game, despite all of the company around him.
Dawson Mayo 6’4″ Advance (2017): An old-school post player who had 18 points and eight rebounds in the victory over North Andrew. Mayo uses his physical strength to get good position around the basket and he finishes well. If he misses, he just gets the rebound and scores. He also throws a nice outlet pass to get the fast break going. The Hornets got a lot of buckets off his accurate one-handed baseball passes.
