Class 1 Final Four: All-Tournament Team
Walnut Grove made school history last week by winning its first ever state championship. After finishing second in the state tournament a year ago, Walnut Grove defeated Advance 65-62 to win the state championship. North Andrew took home the third place trophy after defeating North Andrew.
Here is our Class 1 Final Four All-Tournament Team:
Most Outstanding Player: Logan Thomazin 6’2″ (Walnut Grove): The 2018 guard averaged 31.5 points and 12 rebounds a game and made all of the big shots in leading his team to the coveted state championship. Thomazin scored from everywhere as he knocked down 3-pointers and scored in the post when his team needed a tough bucket. Thomazin had 31 points, 10 rebounds and made 5 pointers in the championship game victory over Advance. He also had 32 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists against Glasgow in the semifinals.
The Next Five
Armani Vermillion 6’0″ (Advance): The talented 2018 guard averaged 31.5 points in two Final Four games. He was a force in the transition game and he also displayed an improved 3-point stroke. Vermillion had 38 points and seven rebounds in the semifinals against North Andrew. He followed up with 25 points and three rebounds in championship game against Walnut Grove.
Dawson Mayo 6’4″ (Advance): The burly 2017 post player averaged 15 points and 10.5 rebounds for the state runners-up in two games. Mayo had 12 points and nine rebounds in the finals against Walnut Grove and 18 points and 12 rebounds in the semifinals victory over North Andrew. Not only was Mayo scoring inside and grabbing rebounds, he fueled the Hornets’ transition game with his one-handed baseball passes that were always on the money.
Hunter Gilkey 6’0″ (Walnut Grove): The 2017 point guard did a little of everything in helping Walnut Grove to the state championship. He had 14 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and eight steals in the state championship game against Advance. Gilkey added four points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in the semifinals against Glasgow. He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.
Kennedy Davis 6’4″ (Glasgow): The 2017 post player averaged 17 points and 14.5 rebounds for the Yellowjackets as a powerful presence in the low blocks. Davis had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the semifinals against Walnut Grove, then followed up with 19 points and 16 rebounds in the third-place game against North Andrew.
Ryan Hughes 5’6″ (North Andrew): The diminutive 2018 point guard had two excellent games in leading North Andrew to a third-place finish. He had 19 points, three rebounds, seven assists and made five 3-pointers in the semifinals against Advance. Hughes also had 16 points in the victory over Glasgow in the third-place game. He could shoot the deep ball and drop dimes.
