Continue ReadingNorthview was ready to get revenge on Edgewood for their loss earlier this year and they took it to them quickly. Senior guard Dylan Hyatt pulled in 26 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists to lead Northview to a 76-61 win over Edgewood on Tuesday night.
MVP: Dylan Hyatt (Northview)
Hyatt was great from beginning to end of this game. He got going early and had 9 points before the end of the first quarter. He was really active and aggressive on offense that Edgewood really didn’t have an answer for him. They didn’t have a guard that could stay in front of him if he decided to drive the lane and that was the thing that hurt Edgewood the most. Hyatt finished with 26 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals on 9/17 shooting.
Best Offensive Performance: Cooper Bybee (Edgewood)
Although Hyatt was really good, Bybee was pretty solid himself. He did get to where he was forcing shots early and he hit a rough patch but overall, he kept Edgewood in this game offensively. While this was a pretty uncharacteristic game for Cooper in terms of his shot, he still managed to put up some numbers and showed a little of why colleges should be showing interest. He’s a big threat from three and if he can reel in his shot selection a little bit he can be really potent. Bybee finished with 23 points.
Best Defensive Performance: Drew Lumsdon (Northview)
Lumsdon battled foul trouble this game but when he was on the floor he was really good. Showed an improved athleticism and jumping ability and he’s much more comfortable in his body to where he was able to move laterally or get off a quick jump to block a shot. He made life tough on the inside for Edgewood on their drives and for guys like Howard. Ultimately, he got in foul trouble because of it but still was enough to help Northview get the win. Lumsdon finished 9 points and 5 rebounds.
Best Play of the Game: Brayden Tucker (Northview)
Tucker is one of the more unknown players in the state and a lot of that is due to the fact that he is a HM baseball prospect. However, he’s so good at basketball and early in the game, probably the best thing we saw all night, was when he hit back-to-back triples. He almost went back-to-back-to-back but it rimmed out. It got the game started off really hot and was a fun sequence to watch.
Best Guy Off The Bench: Caleb Norris (Edgewood)
Norris was a big piece for this Edgewood team as they really lacked size and Northview had a ton of it. He was able to come in as a defensive replacement and slow down Drew Lumsdon. He did a great job in the first half and was able to slow him down enough in the second half. Norris finished with 2 points and 8 rebounds.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Brigham Booe (Northview)
The reason Booe falls under this category is because he dealt with a ton of foul trouble so if you weren’t paying attention, you might not have noticed how well he played to open up the second half before picking up his fourth foul. He compliments Hyatt so well in the backcourt because he’s probably tougher than he is and seemed to step up whenever Hyatt took a breather. Booe finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Best Underclassman: Joe Kido (Edgewood)
With very few options for underclassmen on these two veteran clubs, Kido is the easy pick. He’s a very small sophomore guard with tons of speed and quickness that troubled Northview’s guards at times. Booe and Hyatt got sped up every once in a while by him and he was able to turn that into a counter attack. Kido finished with 5 points and 7 rebounds.
Best Intangibles: Chayton Howard (Edgewood)
This was the best game we had seen from Howard in his career and he really only played well the last three quarters. He does a ton of things well and with his size, he can stretch the floor while still being a guy that can impact plays in the post. His frame is really light, though, and that causes some issues for him but as he matures hopefully that won’t be as big of an issue. Howard finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds.
Best Player Colleges Are Missing On: Dylan Hyatt (Northview)
This Northview team is really loaded so it isn’t a big surprise that Hyatt got overlooked. However, he has been playing like the best player on the team the few times we have seen him this year. The 6’1 combo guard does just about everything and his scoring ability isn’t bad either. DIII and NAIA programs should be taking a look if they need a mix-and-match guard with quite a bit of toughness.
Best Storyline Moving Forward: The thing to watch moving forward is with Northview and if they can keep this level of play going. They have been so up and down this season but at their best they can beat a lot of really quality teams. As we approach the Sectional Draw, their draw could go a long way into helping them in the tournament. So much senior depth and talent that they could be a surprise pick to come out of their Regional if they can get to the second weekend..
