Final Score (3OT): Mishawaka Marian 72 – Penn 69
Penn was in control early in this game, meaning the first three quarters, but the momentum shifted in Mishawaka Marian’s favor in the fourth quarter and all of the overtime periods. Penn was up 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. More of the same in the second quarter as Penn took a 23-16 lead into the break. Seemingly, they had controlled Mishawaka Marian and it was going to be a low scoring affair.
Coming out of the half, the third quarter was much more open and the game flowed more in the full court. At the end of the third quarter the score was 39-29 in favor of Penn and the game looked to be out of reach. Michael Hemingway came out in the fourth quarter and brought Mishawaka Marian back to tie it up at 51-51 at the end of regulation. Mishawaka Marian scored 29 points through the first quarter but posted 22 in the fourth.
In the first overtime, Penn had a chance to seal the game with a few open shots but didn’t knock them down and let Mishawaka Marian tie it up to take it to a second overtime. In the second period, both teams only scored two points and looked to be out of energy. The war of attrition eventually took over and Penn had 3 starters foul out. Mishawaka Marian pulled away at the free-throw line behind Lattimer and sealed the win 72-69.
MVP: Michael Hemingway (Mishawaka Marian)
Michael Hemingway seemed to do no wrong in the entirety of regulation. Aside from missed free throws late in the overtime periods, Michael singlehandedly controlled this game for Mishawaka Marian. Nobody could keep him in front and he seemed to be composed on every possession including his step-back three to send the game into overtime. Hemingway finished with a game high 35 points (10-17 2FG, 1-2 3FG, and 12-19 FT), 6 rebounds (5 defensive and 1 offensive), a game high 6 assists, and a game high 7 steals.
Best Offensive Performance: Michael Hemingway (Mishawaka Marian)
The ball was in Hemingway’s hands for 90% of the Mishawaka Marion possessions. He was the primary ball handler, passer, and scorer all night and he looked comfortable doing it. This is one of the most dominant performances of the season so far. Although his numbers from the free-throw line don’t stand out, he was 9 for his first 10 to start off the game. Fatigue played a role late as he played all 47 minutes last night. Hemingway finished with a game high 35 points (10-17 2FG, 1-2 3FG, and 12-19 FT) and a game high 6 assists. He completely dominated the Penn defense.
Best Defensive Performance: Michael Hemingway (Mishawaka Marian)
Again, Hemingway was the most outstanding player on both ends. Not only was he breaking the defense down and scoring at will, he was also contributing on the defensive side of the floor which lead to easy baskets in transition. Michael lead the game with 7 steals and added 5 defensive rebounds. His effort on both ends of the floor was something to take in but fatigue definitely got the best of him because his efficiency declined as we got into the second and third overtime periods.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Zach Lattimer (Mishawaka Marian)
Zach was face-guarded from the tip to the final buzzer. He faced Penn’s toughest defender and had to work on every possession to get open. He was effective when he got open and got the ball in his hands and quietly put together a solid game, especially down the stretch when they needed someone to step up and make free-throw to seal the deal. Lattimer finished with 16 points (1-2 2FG, 2-5 3FG, and 8-8 FT), 5 rebounds (3 defensive and 2 offensive), 1 block, and 1 assist. Although he didn’t touch the ball as much as he’d like, his defender was taken out of help-side which opened driving lines for his teammates.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: Noah Applegate (Penn)
Noah is typically a starter for Penn and plays the most minutes for this team but last night was Senior Night so he found himself coming off the bench mid-first quarter. This didn’t stop the sophomore from making an impact quick. Applegate has an aggressive approach to both ends of the floor especially when it comes to rebounding. Noah finished with 18 points (5-7 2FG, 1-2 3FG, and 5-6 FT), a game high 13 rebounds (9 defensive and 4 offensive), 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. A double-double “off-the-bench” doesn’t come often but with his level of play, it seemed inevitable.
Best Quiet Impact: Matt McCown (Penn)
Aside from his early struggles from the field, McCown put together a solid game for Penn last night in his final home game there. Matt started 0-5 from the field but that didn’t stop him from letting his presence be felt. McCown finished with 16 points (7-16 2FG and 2-4 FT), 9 rebounds (5 defensive and 4 offensive), 3 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists. It never really felt like he was completely zoned in to the game but his stats say otherwise when it’s all said and done. Solid game from the 6’9” senior forward.
Best Intangibles: Connor Schneider (Penn)
Connor was the player selected by Coach Rhodes to face-guard Lattimer all night long and he took it upon himself to keep him scoreless for as long as possible. It was evident that Schneider was taking the matchup personally when he was in Lattimer’s face from the start to finish with the same intensity. Connor was also all over the floor last night diving for loose balls and winning his team extra possessions. Schneider finished with 2 points (0-1 2FG and 2-4 FT), 8 rebounds (4 defensive and 4 offensive), 3 steals, and 2 assists.
Best Rebounder: Noah Applegate (Penn)
If Applegate were 100% healthy, played his normal starter minutes, and not been in foul trouble, this would have been a 20-20 game from him. He uses his 6’6” frame and athleticism to go after each and every rebound on both ends of the floor. He has great hands and is good with his body positioning. Applegate also high points the rebound and wins any of the 50-50 balls. Noah finished with a game high 13 rebounds (9 defensive and 4 offensive) to help keep his team in the game.
Best Underclassmen: Noah Applegate (Penn)
Again, had we seen the typical minutes and health from Applegate, he could have very well lead his team to victory in regulation with a 20-20 game. Noah fouled out in the second overtime period which greatly diminished the playmaking ability that was on the floor. The sophomore wing is starting to come into his own and his skills are increasingly rapidly. He shot the ball extremely well from the floor. Noah finished with 18 points (5-7 2FG, 1-2 3FG, and 5-6 FT), a game high 13 rebounds (9 defensive and 4 offensive), 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. Definitely a player to keep an eye on moving forward.
Biggest Takeaway: Hemingway Beat Penn
Michael Hemingway controlled this game on both ends of the floor. The pace was in Mishawaka Marian’s favor starting in the second half. Penn dominated early on but Hemingway took over in the fourth quarter and willed his team into overtime. He didn’t force on the offensive end but made everything look smooth and easy. Penn is having a tough season with a lot of close losses but they will be a team to keep an eye on come post season if they can put together complete games.
