Some of that success must be attributed to 6’3 shooting guard Nate Marino. Marino is only averaging 5.9 points on a loaded team but has proved that with minutes he can really put up points.
Marino is a good shooter from distance and scored 20 points in a game earlier this year on 5/8 shooting from deep in just 16 minutes of play. With a bit of a diminished role this year, but still a key part of the team, Marino had to find other ways that he could impact the squad that didn’t necessarily mean scoring the ball.
“I think what I’ve improved on the most is my defense and defensive mentality as well as crashing the boards and boxing out,” Marino said. “Last year I would get beat off the dribble and I would leak out after shots and get boxed out. This year I don’t allow that to happen. I am a lot more focused and pride myself on bringing energy, positivity, and a new dimension to our offense.”
Marino has tons of interest from more than 25 schools ranging from every level D1 to JUCO but doesn’t have any offers yet. One of the things that perk the coaches interest is Marino’s ability to shoot the ball consistently. He may not average a ton of points but he scores the ball efficiently, and that’s what the next level looks for. Marino also says that the coaches love his ability to get better all the time.
South Bend Riley is full of good players and Marino thinks that it will take them deep into the tournament come March. Already off to the best start in school history, South Bend Riley should have no problem continuing their success.
“Our team chemistry is at an all time high,” Marino said. “We stay focused on the ultimate goal. The rest of the year I am looking forward to having fun getting better each and every day and chasing our team goal.”
Marino doesn’t have any schools at the top of his list and he hasn’t cut any out either because, “If I have the chance to play in college that’s a blessing in itself, so I am keeping everything open right now.”
Marino is looking to study Computer Science, Technology, Software Design, or Physical Therapy and wants to be on a team that makes him better while he helps his team get better. Marino also says that he wants to be close to home, albeit he’s open to any opportunity that presents itself.
