University of South Dakota hired Dawn Plitzuweit as their new women’s basketball coach last spring and with Dawn came AJ, a player that has quickly shown he is one of the top five players in South Dakota’s junior class.
AJ had a nice underclassmen career in Kentucky High School hoops but in South Dakota Plitzuweit has helped Vermillion to a permanent top ten Class A spot and a 16-3 record thus far.
“Our season has been great,” AJ said. “We’ve really begun to play together and step up at the right time.”
AJ has scored close to 22 points per game playing talented senior Cooper Williams and his 16 points a contest at lead guard. Both share the ball well which has been a key part to the Tanagers success.
“I’ve learned to be more aggressive offensively but yet still keep my teammates involved,” AJ said.
Now AJ and Vermillion are looking at the playoffs which start shortly after the team’s season finale (tomorrow) against Canton.
Region 4A should belong to Vermillion which would give them a first round bye and a likely game with Dakota Valley and Lennox. Winner of that would be in the Sweet 16. AJ seems ready for the test.
“We expect to do our best as a team and to play our best basketball this time of year and hopefully we can make a state championship run.”
As far as college basketball goes Plitzuweit will have options. He’s already earned scholarship offers from all three South Dakota division two college programs.
“At this time, I have been offered scholarships to play basketball at Northern State University, Augustana University, and the University of Sioux Falls,” listed Plitzuweit.
